About stuying in Groningen

A colleague once asked us to describe Groningen in one word, I replied to her ‘comfortable’. Groningen is a little bit far from noisy big cities, so this provides Groningen with a quite academic learning atmosphere. But this does not mean isolated, conversely, the university encourages international experiences, including recruiting a large number of international students. So this city is like a small United Nations, a quiet but fully energetic student city.

On campus, it is very easy for you to handle a few complicated matters after you consult with your program coordinator. For example, before your departure, you need to apply for a residence permit and when the semester starts, you need to register. They always respond promptly to all emails. Outside campus, I feel free to live here because almost every citizen can speak decent English; I never worry about language barriers when I go outside to have fun. I like sunny afternoons in Groningen, walking around the city and enjoying the peace this city brings to me.

Thanks to a cooperation between the University and Uppsala University, Sweden, I had the opportunity to do an exchange in Sweden for half a year. This unique experience broadened my horizons, in particular, I gained insight into cultural differences among China, the Netherlands and Sweden. Generally, life in Groningen is comfortable. The university offered me a lot and in return I am glad to contribute my limited energy to this great university as an international alumni ambassador.
