Transdisciplinary Center for Qualitative Methods

The Transdisciplinary Centre for Qualitative Methods (TCQM) is a joint initiative between Manipal University, Manipal, India and the University of Groningen, the Netherlands. The grant from the Dr. TMA Pai Endowment Chair in Qualitative Research awarded to Ajay Bailey provides seed fund to carry out various research and training activities of the centre. TCQM was inaugurated by Dr. H. Vinod Bhat, Vice Chancellor, Manipal University, Manipal on 13th December 2016. The inaugural seminar (endorsed by IGU) was held on the topic of 'Gendering Qualitative Methods:People, Power and Place (see photo).

For the Faculty of Spatial Sciences (FSS) it provides an excellent opportunity to start joint courses and apply for joint-research projects. In addition to Public Health, TCQM has links with other research centers which focus on Urban Studies, Architecture and Spatial Epidemiology. TCQM provides space for Masters student projects, Bachelor projects and staff initiated research projects.

TCQM currently has one Research Associate and two interns who would be happy to assist in research and fieldwork supervision. From FSS Ajay Bailey and Louise Meijeirng are currently involved in research and training activities . If you would like to know more please do contact Ajay Bailey (
