The North Pole: Exploitable Wilderness?
On 27 May 2013 Louwrens Hacquebord, the first Dutch professor of Arctic and Antarctic Studies, retired. De nationally and internationally renowned Arctic researcher discussed the changing attitude towards the Arctic regions in his farewell lecture. In an opinion piece for the University of Groningen, Hacquebord states: ‘Cuddly status of North Pole makes protection more urgently needed than ever’.
