Japan: FSE and ISR visit Osaka, Kyoto, and Tokyo

21 December 2023

From 28 November to 1 December, a delegation from FSE and ISR led by FSE Dean Prof. Joost Frenken visited Japan and met with counterparts of FSE at Osaka University (UG’s Strategic Partner in Japan), Kyoto University, and the University of Tokyo. In the delegation: Prof. Bayu Jayawardhana (Director of Engineering); Dr. Herman Woerdenbag (Pharmacy); Ms. Liza ten Velde (Internationalization FSE); Mrs. Jodien Houwers (ISR) and Mr. Tim Zwaagstra (ISR).

The goal of the visit, to discuss options for Double Doctorate programs as well as student exchange, was met to the satisfaction of all involved. Next steps, especially in Double Doctorates, will be to build upon current connections of ENTEG (esp. New UG Rector Prof. Jacquelien Scherpen and Prof. Jayawardhana) and GRIP in Osaka and Kyoto, and to revitalize connections of FSE in the University of Tokyo, through online matchmaking meetings.

Special thanks go to long-time Japan regional manager Mrs. Jodien Houwers for sharing her knowledge of the collaboration with Japan with the delegation. Per the conclusion of this visit, Japan regional management for ISR will be fully taken on by Mr Tim Zwaagstra (in addition to remaining the manager for Southeast Asia).
