Another successful edition of the summer school on Financial Inclusion and Sustainability

Although the university has closed its doors for the summer break, learning and collaboration always continue. From 5–11 July, 37 participants gathered in Groningen for the annual summer school on Financial Inclusion and Sustainability, jointly organised by Stellenbosch University, Université Laval, and the University of Groningen.

Students from Stellenbosch, Hong Kong, Italy, and Groningen spent an intensive week exploring the theoretical foundations of financial inclusion and sustainable economic growth. The programme covered topics such as financial innovation, cross-border banking, and their relationship with economic development. Participants also deepened their understanding of impact analysis theory and its practical application in developing countries.

The summer school was led by Prof. Robert Lensink (FEB), Dr. Calumn Hamilton (FEB), Prof. Charles Adjasi (Stellenbosch University), Prof. Issouf Soumaré (Université Laval), and Prof. Kristina Czura (FEB). Throughout the week, participants learned how to design randomised experiments to measure the impact of financial inclusion interventions, evaluate the inclusivity of financial products, and develop frameworks for designing more inclusive financial services.

As in previous years, the summer school proved to be a great success. Alongside the engaging lectures and lively discussions, the dinner in Balloo was one of the highlights of the week. The active participation and collaborative atmosphere throughout the programme contributed to another successful edition of the summer school.
