Call for Contributions

We invite SoTL practitioners from all career stages to submit their proposals to contribute to the conference. The conference theme “Making connections through the scholarship of teaching and learning” is apparent in the three conference subthemes:

We invite practitioners at all career stages to present their work at the conference. Presentations can be given in the following formats:

Paper

Single paper presentations are ideal for presentations on completed SoTL projects but also include topics about or related to SoTL itself. The goal of paper presentations is to provide presenters the opportunity to share knowledge and facilitate critical dialogue with conference participants. Each paper presentation will last a maximum of 20 minutes, followed by 10 minutes of discussion with audience members. Three presentations will be assigned by the programme committee to a session centered around a shared theme.  


PechaKucha 

New at EuroSoTL is the PechaKucha 20x20 presentation: 20 slides that are presented for exactly 20 seconds each. PechaKucha presentations therefore last exactly 6 minutes and 40 seconds, followed by 10 minutes of discussion with audience members. PechaKucha is ideal for a swift and lively presentation of your work, focusing on key ideas and sparking interest of your audience. Four PechaKucha presentations will be assigned by the programme committee to a session centered around a shared theme. 

Panel Discussion

Panel discussions are particularly appropriate for topics that benefit from multiple perspectives, including disciplinary, institutional, and national perspectives. The goal for panel discussions is to provide panelists and audience members the opportunity to exchange insights, engage in discussion, and learn from each other’s experiences. Panels should include a minimum of three panelists that engage in interaction with each other and with the audience. Panel discussions last 60 minutes. 

Workshop

Workshops provide an opportunity for hands-on exploration of a SoTL question or research method. Additionally, workshops focusing on student-activating teaching and learning activities are highly encouraged, as long as they elucidate the impact of these activities on learning by delving into their scholarly and theoretical background. For instance, a workshop centered around the use of LEGO in the classroom could explain its influence on students’ motivation or experiential learning. The workshops prioritize interactivity and showcase effective practices in both SoTL, Teaching and Learning, and workshop pedagogy. Workshops last 60 minutes. 

Poster

Posters present preliminary SoTL work, completed projects, or considerations of the field of SoTL in general. To inspire detailed dialogue and critical engagement, at least one author will attend the poster session to present and discuss the work with other conference participants.


Pre-conference workshop

Pre-conference workshops are extended opportunities for hands-on exploration of a SoTL question or research method. These are highly engaging sessions that have clear participant outcomes, targeted at specific audiences. Pre-conference workshops last three hours. 

Submission

Proposals can be submitted only by using the submission portal, which opens on October 15 2024. The deadline for submissions is 30 November 2024. Please provide 1) a title and 2) an abstract of max. 250 words of your proposal. A bibliography of max. 5 references may be included. The title and abstract will be published on the conference webpage and the book of abstracts.


Proposal review criteria

Each proposal will be reviewed by two reviewers, using the following criteria:

Content of Paper, Pecha-Kucha, Panel, (pre-conference) Workshop, or Poster

  1. Demonstrates an understanding of SoTL issues and/or existing scholarship in the field.
  2. Identifies and explains how the content relates to important question(s) related to SoTL, and/or the conference theme and subthemes.
  3. Describes how the work contributes to the understanding or practice of SoTL.


Significance of the work

  1. Advances SoTL through new or novel knowledge or practice, and/or extends and builds-upon current knowledge or practice.

How the work will be shared

  1. Explains how presenter(s) will apply an appropriate conference pedagogy to ensure scholarly, engaged, diverse, inclusive, and collegial knowledge-sharing.

Other ways to contribute

Fringe sessions

We invite proposals for fringe sessions during lunch breaks or other free time during the conference, during which participants connect through engaging in social activities, such as yoga, music, games, a guided walk, etc. Proposals for fringe sessions will be reviewed by the organizing committee, only a short description is required. 

Reviewing proposals

You are invited to contribute to the conference by acting as a reviewer for submitted proposals. We encourage scholars from all career stages and from a diversity of geographic locations across Europe to volunteer for this role.

Buddy programme

Sign up as a mentor in our buddy programme and connect with people that are new to SoTL. Help them navigate the conference and the world of SoTL.

Attending the conference

You can also actively participate in the conference as an attendee, even if you are not formally contributing by sharing your SoTL work. The registration portal will open February 1, 2025.
