On Thursday, 1 October 2026, the Centre for Teaching and Learning launch event celebrated the official start of the new department at the University of Groningen! The expertise of colleagues of the former Teaching Academy Groningen (TAG) and those of several teams from Educational Support and Innovation (CIT-ESI) is brought together in the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) in an effort to further strengthen continuous educational development across the University.

The CTL as Catalyst and Connector

“We want the CTL to be both a catalyst and a connector, a place that helps good ideas move forward, brings people and expertise together, and supports faculties with the questions they are working on,” said Marloes Otten, head of the Centre for Teaching and Learning, during her speech at the opening of the event.

The CTL’s academic lead, Senka Neuman-Stanivukovic, also spoke at the event, stressing the importance of the CTL’s role in ensuring joint effort towards meaningful and effective educational developments across the UG’s educational community.

“In the University, people are constantly experimenting, solving problems and developing new ways of teaching and learning. The challenge is how we, collectively, can learn from all of that without assuming that what works in one place will work everywhere. That is where I see the CTL's role, in creating the conditions for people and ideas to connect, for knowledge to travel, and for new possibilities to grow,” said the academic lead.

Let’s Grow Together

The floor was then given to the attendees of the event, the educational staff, to contribute their ideas on what the CTL can do for them and the University as a whole, as well as the educational questions and topics they are working on. The take-away was that the CTL is still developing and that its team encourages the educational community to contribute to its development.

The attendees could then join the information market, meeting the CTL team and getting familiarized with the CTL’s existing offer, or take part in co-creation sessions regarding future-proof education and continuous educational development for educational staff. The event was a great success that concluded with connections being made and a wealth of ideas contributed for the CTL team to get inspired by and take on board.

“The ambition is to make our university better at learning from itself and others, and through that, to create the conditions in which education can flourish,” concluded Senka Neuman-Stanivukovic.
