Synergy for energy - the Energy Academy
In early October this year, the Energy Academy received its initial funding of 6 million euros from the Ministry of Economic Affairs as part of the so called Green Deal - a governmental program promoting green growth and a sustainable society in the Netherlands. The Academy is an ambitious ten year plan to expand the role of Northern Netherlands as a prominent centre for knowledge, technology and innovation about energy. The existing extensive expertise in the area of energy sustainability, spread over a number of departments at the University of Groningen, will be a major component in fueling the engine of the Energy Academy. > read more

Observing the early history of the Universe
LOFAR (Low-Frequency Array) - a pioneering European radio astronomy project for the development of a highly advanced and versatile radio telescope is finally delivering valuable data to set the astronomers in motion. Researchers at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, University of Groningen, a key collaborator in the project, have announced that LOFAR has achieved the expected high-performance and sensitivity, making it our most powerful eye to look as far back as 13 billion years into the history of the Universe. > read more
Lighting up for life - successful use of fluorescence dye in the fight against cancer
Prof. Gooitzen M van Dam, a leading surgeon at the Department of Surgery, Division of Surgical Oncology at RUG, and his team performed the first ever fluorescence-guided surgery on a patient with ovarian cancer. This surgery demonstrated the feasibility and potential of the innovative flourescence-imaging technique for removing cancerous cells through surgery. The results, published recently in the prestigious journal Nature Medicine reveal that the new technique is a huge step forward in providing surgeons with an effective tool in their fight against cancer. > read more
Holiday cheer - a festive dinner for our international students
On 15 December the Alumni Relations Office and Fundraising Office together with ESN Groningen welcomed over 100 international students to the first ever International Students Holiday Dinner. As befits such a historic occasion, the dinner took place in the Academy Building. The students, representing over 44 different nationalities, formed a true representation of the international institute the University of Groningen prides itself in being. > read more
