Support for students and staff in times of international crises and geopolitical tensions

International calamities

The world is facing numerous challenges – from armed conflicts to natural disasters and other crises. We understand that these events can raise questions or cause distress. Such significant developments can affect how you feel, and in turn impact your studies or work.

At the University of Groningen, we find it important to care for one another and to show understanding for the impact that these situations may have.

What does the University do in the event of a crisis abroad?

When a crisis occurs somewhere in the world, we check whether any of our students or staff are present in the affected region. If you are there, you will receive an email from us asking if you are safe, along with instructions on what to do if you find yourself in an unsafe situation.

Download the Travel app*

We advise you to download the Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel app. This app provides up-to-date travel advice and guidance on what to do in the event of an emergency abroad.

*This app is only available in the Dutch language

For staff

All travels booked via Diversity Travel will be registered in the Mtrip app. Through this app, you will receive email updates on disruptions in your destination country – such as natural disasters, strikes, or other incidents.

I’m experiencing mental health issues due to a war or crisis. Where can I go for support?

We understand that world events can take a mental toll and may affect your academic or professional life. Support is available through various university services for both students and staff. For staff members, your manager is your first point of contact.

Where can I ask questions?

If you’re planning to travel, always download the Travel App from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and check the Ministry’s website for the latest travel advice.
