dr. W.M. (W Martin) Smid

Martin Smid was born in The Netherlands and obtained his MD in Medicine at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands) in 1988 and his PhD in 1995. He started his medical career in 1988 at the University Hospital Groningen as MD in the Department of Internal Medicine for 3 years. Until 1996 he worked at the University Hospital Groningen as Consultant for Coagulation. In 1996 he started working for the Blood Bank in Enschede as Medical Director. Later he filled positions at several Blood Bank locations subsequently as Director/Head of Medical Affairs and Division Director. During this period he successfully followed an executive MBA. He held the position of Manager Transfusion Medicine at Sanquin Blood Bank North East Netherlands.

He is Director of the Academic Institute for the International Development of Transfusion Medicine (IDTM), which offers a postgraduate master of Management of Transfusion Medicine (MMTM).

Since 2005 he was Managing Director of Sanquin Consulting Services (until his retirement in 2025), an internationally facilitating unit of the Sanquin Blood Supply Foundation, providing guidance advice services to restricted economy countries. In this function he has been involved in a number of different countries including TA provision for PEPfAR in Zambia and Uganda, for EU in Turkey, in Sri Lanka, Twinning in Suriname and EU Twinning in Georgia, Romania and Serbia.

His the Treasurer of ISBT he active as member of the working party on Blood Supply Management and Global Blood Safety.

As of 2000 he is Advisor of the Red Cross Blood Bank at Curacao. Dr. Martin Smid takes part in the WHO Global Blood Safety Network and also participates in the project dedicated to Patient Safety and Rights. For AfSBT he has been a member of the Step-Wise Accreditation Project Advisory Group. He has more than 30 international publications in haemophilia, coagulation and transfusion. For AATM he is member of the Governing council.
