Regenerative Agriculture: How Do You Build a Future-Proof Farm Business?

Regenerative agriculture is more than a promise: it is a practical pathway toward healthy soils and a resilient farm business. Yet making the transition requires smart strategies, new business models, and a clear vision for the future. This PhD research works together with Dutch arable farmers to explore these challenges and opportunities.

How can agricultural entrepreneurs transition to regenerative agriculture while maintaining the economic viability and continuity of their businesses? This research examines how farmers can leverage their existing resources — such as machinery, land, financial capital, and entrepreneurial capabilities — to navigate the transition and manage uncertainty. In addition, we identify and analyse successful existing business models and use expert insights to explore how future business models for sustainable, nature-inclusive agriculture may evolve. In doing so, we aim to contribute to a future in which regenerative agriculture is not only feasible, but also economically rewarding.

Because farmers deserve better — for the soil, and without sacrificing their livelihoods.
