My PhD research centres on the role of altruism in everyday host-guest encounters in tourism and hospitality contexts and how it can be leveraged to encourage sustainable practices and behaviours. I approach this by critically examining altruism through diverse theoretical and philosophical perspectives, comparing how different groups of guests and hosts understand and enact it, and testing whether behaviourally informed interventions can encourage more altruistic practices. In doing so, my research attempts to underline altruism as a powerful yet overlooked force in rethinking the ethics and sustainability of tourism and hospitality
