Mahdyar Shirazifarashah is a Research Fellow in Religion, Culture and Society at the University of Groningen. His scholarly formation began with Qurʾanic memorisation (Ḥifẓ) and developed into sustained philological engagement with primary Islamic sources. His research interests lie at the intersection of intellectual history, the moral, affective, and psycho-spiritual dimensions of religious belief, and the cultural history of ruling elites in pre-modern Muslim societies. His most recent project examined the sectarian milieu of 8th-century CE Kufa, tracing the cultural authority of Ibn Masʿūd across the religious life of its community. Methodologically, his work blends textual criticism, isnad-cum-matn analysis, and codicology.
