I am an Assistant Professor in the Department of Media and Journalism Studies at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). I have previously held positions as a Postdoctoral Research fellow at the Social Media Lab (Toronto, Canada), as a Visiting Scholar at the Political Science Department of the University of California in Santa Barbara (Santa Barbara, United States) and the TELECOM-CIDE (Mexico D.F.), and as a PhD researcher at the Internet Interdisciplinary Institute (Barcelona, Spain).

I am a new media scholar. My research and teaching interests lie at the intersection between new media, digital democracy and social networks. My works examine the societal implications of people and organizations’ communications in online social networks. Methodologically, I employ a combination of methods, large datasets, and computational social science techniques.

My research has been published in peer-reviewed journals such as Information, Communication & Society, New Media & Society, International Journal of Communication, Journal of Learning, Media and Technology, Policy & Internet, Javnost-The Public, Journal of Information Technology & Politics, and Information Polity (among others). I wrote the book ‘Telmex, Slim and the Mexican Government: The ‘Know-Who factor?’ From the ‘Monopoly of the State’ to the ‘Invisible Hand of the Market’ (In French).

I have received grants from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), the Netherlands eScience Center and the Digital Humanities Centre and RIS/ Data Science Centre at the University of Groningen, and scholarships from the Volskwagen Foundation, the Ryerson University, the Open University of Catalonia, and the University of Quebec in Montreal.

Outside of academia, I have worked as a new media advisor for politicians, parties and think-tanks.  I was President of JEF-Catalunya and Vice-President of JEF-Spain, two  non-governmental organizations working to create a democratic European Federation.
