M.C. (Maarten) Eisma, PhD

Short Biography

Dr. Maarten Eisma obtained his master degree in Clinical and Developmental Psychology at the University of Groningen in 2008. After graduating from the University of Groningen he obtained his PhD in Clinical Psychology at Utrecht University under the supervision of Prof. dr. Margaret Stroebe, dr. Henk Schut, Prof. dr. Paul Boelen, prof. dr. Jan van den Bout and prof. dr. Wolfgang Stroebe. The title of his PhD thesis was "Rumination following bereavement: Assessment, working mechanisms and intervention."

After obtaining his PhD, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Health Psychology Group of the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, under mentorship of (among others) prof. dr. Marijn de Bruin and prof. dr. Marie Johnston. His main project was the IC-SMOKE project, a large meta-analysis on behaviour change techniques in smoking cessation interventions. In 2017, Maarten returned to the Netherlands to become an Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology at the Clinical Psychology and Experimental Psychopathology Department of the Heymans Institute of the University of Groningen (he entered the tenure-track in 2019, received tenure in 2021).
