Teaching & Supervision

Teaching the next generation of analytical scientists

Teaching is an important part of my academic work. I teach analytical chemistry, bioanalysis, mass spectrometry and glycoscience across BSc, MSc and PhD programmes, with a particular focus on connecting fundamental analytical principles to real biomedical and pharmaceutical questions.

At the University of Groningen, I coordinate the BSc courses Instrumental Analysis and Bioanalysis within Pharmaceutical Sciences. I also contribute to MSc-level teaching in pharmaceutical analysis and drug discovery and teach mass spectrometry to BSc excellence and PhD students within the TI-COAST program.

My teaching approach centres on understanding why an analytical method works rather than simply learning how to operate it. I aim to connect analytical chemistry to realistic research problems and increasingly incorporate active learning, case-based teaching and research examples into my courses.

Current teaching

• Instrumental Analysis – BSc Pharmacy
  Course coordinator and lecturer. Teaching includes chromatography, mass spectrometry and other instrumental analytical techniques.
• Bioanalysis – BSc Pharmacy
  Course coordinator and lecturer, focusing on analytical strategies for studying drugs and biomolecules in complex biological systems.
• MSc teaching
  Contributions to pharmaceutical analysis, mass spectrometry, glycomics and related topics within MSc programmes at the University of Groningen.
• PhD and professional education
  Teaching in advanced mass spectrometry and glyco(proteo)mics, including contributions to TI-COAST training.
• International teaching
  Since 2019, I have co-developed and taught the international two-day course Clinical Glyco(Proteo)mics by Mass Spectrometry, delivered at international conferences including MSACL and IMSC in Europe and North America.

Supervision & mentoring

I supervise researchers from BSc students through to postdoctoral researchers, with an emphasis on developing scientific independence, critical thinking and ownership of research.

I have supervised five PhD trajectories to completion, including a cum laude PhD in 2026, and currently act as promotor for multiple PhD candidates. My supervision has also included more than 14 MSc students and 6 BSc students, visiting researchers and technical staff.

In 2026, I was selected as a Top-3 finalist for the University of Groningen Faculty PhD Supervisor Award, recognising excellence in doctoral supervision.
