Research profile

My research is positioned at the interface of analytical chemistry, glycoscience and biomedical research. I develop high-sensitivity analytical technologies for the structural characterization of glycans, glycoproteins and other biomolecules, with mass spectrometry and capillary electrophoresis–mass spectrometry (CE-MS) as key technologies.

My work has contributed to advancing highly sensitive and isomer-resolved glycomics and glycoproteomics and their application to biological and clinical questions. My current research increasingly focuses on obtaining molecular information from very small sample amounts, with the long-term ambition of bringing structurally resolved glycomics to the single-cell level. I also develop computational approaches for glycomics, including the open-source GlycoGenius platform.

Since establishing my independent research programme at the University of Groningen, I have built a research team spanning analytical method development, glycomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and biomedical applications.

Research leadership and supervision

I was awarded ius promovendi in December 2025 and currently act as promotor for multiple PhD candidates. I have supervised five PhD trajectories to completion, including one PhD candidate who graduated cum laude in 2026, alongside postdoctoral researchers, visiting scientists, MSc and BSc students and technical staff.

Since 2026, I have served as Lead of the Medicinal Chemistry & Bioanalysis research cluster within the Groningen Research Institute of Pharmacy.


Scientific community and leadership

I regularly organise and chair scientific sessions and meetings, including activities at IMSC, MSACL, HUPO, X-omics, FAST and NWO CHAINS. I serve as Review Editor for Frontiers in Chemistry and regularly review manuscripts for international journals including Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Reviews, Journal of Proteome Research, Nature Communications, Molecular Omics and Trends in Biotechnology.


International scientific recognition

I have delivered more than 55 oral presentations, including 34 invited lectures, of which 21 were international invitations. Invited presentations include the HUPO World Congress, BMSS Annual Meeting, Human Glycome Project, Iberoamerican Conference on Mass Spectrometry and European Glycoscience Community Webinar.

I was first author of the international MIRAGE reporting guidelines for CE-based glycomics (Glycobiology, 2022) and was invited as co-lead author of the Chemical Reviews review on high-throughput glycomics. Since 2019, I have co-developed and taught the international course Clinical Glyco(Proteo)mics by Mass Spectrometry at MSACL and IMSC.


Teaching and academic development

I coordinate the BSc courses Instrumental Analysis and Bioanalysis within Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Groningen and contribute to MSc and PhD education in analytical chemistry, mass spectrometry and glyco(proteo)mics.

I obtained my University Teaching Qualification (BKO) in 2025 and have completed additional training in academic leadership, PhD supervision, mentoring and effective feedback.


Public engagement

I regularly contribute to activities aimed at making analytical science accessible to broader audiences, including Zpannend Zernike, public lectures and presentations, science communication activities for children, and outreach related to cancer research. Previous activities include a radio interview on omics research and recurring public presentations for the Cure for Cancer Foundation.
