Mar 2001-Jul 2003	Responsible investigator for the project “Dynamics of malaria parasites in areas of high transmission” and co-investigator of the study “A spatial analysis of the impact of insecticide-treated nets for malaria control in Tanzania”, carried out in the Kilombero and Ulanga districts of Tanzania. Projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF). The work entailed: - Mapping of 15000 households (25 villages), health facilities, schools, markets, major shops and waypoints that allow accurate mapping of roads, cross-roads and railway line within the established Demographic Surveillance System (DSS) in Kilombero and Ulanga districts, using global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS, Map-Info). Analysis of maps and data collected. - Entomological surveys during 2 years, oocyst rate and sporozoite rate (ELISA). Analysis of data collected. - Bednet coverage and usage survey, mortality data of members of the 15000 households. Mapping and analysis of data. - Support the running of the DSS Co-investigator of the study “Choice and people’s preferences of long lasting insecticide-impregnated nets in Tanzania”. Project funded by WHO.
May 2000 - Feb 2001	Study of the epidemiology and risk factors for the transmission of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus in an adult intensive care unit in the UK: molecular and classic epidemiology, bacterial culture and antibiotic resistance tests.

Sep 1994 – Sep 1999 (PhD)	Epidemiology, risk factors, drug resistance and population dynamics of malaria among indigenous communities of the Venezuela Amazon, entailing: Fieldwork in indigenous Yanomami and Yekwana communities, Amazonas State, Venezuela: field techniques for collection and preservation of blood, urine and stool samples for subsequent analysis. Setting up a field laboratory for diagnostic of parasitic diseases. WHO chloroquine resistant in vivo and in vitro test Laboratory techniques: PCR, restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP), DNA sequencing, automated laser fragment analysis (ALFA), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), indirect immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT) and thin layer chromatography. Epidemiology and Statistics: univariate and multivariate analysis using advanced statistical software packages.
May – Aug 1994 (MSc)	Field work in a rural village in The Gambia: use of entomological techniques to study vector-host dynamics in the transmission of malaria and the use of insecticide impregnated bednets. Use of molecular biology techniques for sample analysis Thesis: “Use of PCR to identify the individual host on whom mosquitoes in Gambian experimental huts had fed”.
