When: | Th 05-06-2025 09:30 - 16:00 |
Where: | House of Connections |
The Human Mobility & Migration Lab and the European Integration Research Group invite all RAS fellows to the Democracy & Governance Research Day ’40 Years of Schengen: Migration as a Driver of European (Dis)integration?’ taking place on June 5 at House of Connections. This is the first collaboration project between the two research groups within the thematic group of Democracy & Governance and connects transdisciplinary perspectives on relevant questions regarding migration and European integration. The three main approaches to measure whether migration is a driver of European (dis)integration will be about labour migration, the securitisation of migration, and finally, the European integration of migration governance.
Schengen and European integration have been contested concepts throughout history. Forty years ago the first tentative steps towards the Schengen Area were undertaken. Ten years ago the border regime had been put under severe pressure via the political migration crisis. Next year the New Pact on Migration and Asylum will come into force. Several developments and events have significantly transformed European integration in relation to migration patterns and governance. Reasons enough to reflect across varying disciplines on the migration-European integration nexus of the past, present and future.
The key aim of the Research Day is to connect RUG scholars who work on migration and European integration besides promoting more transdisciplinary, inter-faculty exchanges and (future) cooperation.
