Family important in choosing place of residence

Seven years ago, Professor of Demography Clara Mulder struggled with the question of whether to apply for a job in Groningen. It was not merely the prospect of changing jobs that worried her, but also that of living very far away from her sick father. Mulder claims that, for many people, family plays a large role in the decision of whether or not to move house within the same country. Researchers, on the other hand, often assume that jobs or training programmes are the main cause for people to move long-distance. In her Family Ties project, Mulder highlights the role of family in the decision to move. This role appears to be greater than even Mulder had previously thought.
