Algae and climate change

On board NICO research vessel Pelagia Dr Jacqueline Stefels en Dr Maria van Leeuwe study the ecological consequences of the changing conditions in the Atlantic Ocean. During the transatlantic crossing they study the presence, diversity and functioning of microscopic organisms like single-cell algae in seawater and deep-sea sediment. This provides insight into the ecological effects of changing ocean conditions caused by climate change.
