A silent shift? The precarization of the Dutch housing market

Like labour contracts, renting contracts in the Netherlands used to be 'for life'. However, temporary contracts are quickly becoming the only form of housing accessible to many people. While the rise of the risk society (Beck 1992) in the context of labour and welfare markets has received ample scholarly attention, similar developments in the housing market remain largely unnoticed. This research addresses this by mapping and analyzing the precarization of the Dutch housing market, using the Randstad as a case-study. Through a combined quantitative-qualitative approach new insights into the precarization of life, relevant to science as well as policy, will be yielded.
