we will be joined by Dr. Saskia Schomber of the LMU in Munich, who will speak to us about: “I thought I was in Cnidus”: An Embodied Reading of Lucian’s Erotes.
"This paper offers an embodied reading of Lucian's Ἔρωτες. Focusing on the embedded narrative about a young man who falls in love with the statue of the Cnidian Aphrodite, I first examine the implications of the anecdotal form for the dialogue. Second, and building on this, I approach the dialogue from the perspective of embodiment, which I argue is central both to its discourse and to its narrative structure. The agalmatophilia-anecdote thus positions bodies and embodied experience as a central issue of the text."
Please also join us after the lecture for a conversation with Saskia, an early-career postdoc in Munich. She will share why she chose to pursue a PhD, how she secured her postdoc position, and her experiences in academia — a great opportunity for (R)MA students considering an academic career!
