Call for papers and pitches
On Friday 9th June 2023 the OIKOS Research Group Cultural Interactions in the Ancient World (CIAW) warmly invites (R)MA, PhD students, postdocs and senior members of the research group who are working on a topic related to cultural interaction to attend a research-in-progress afternoon meeting. Those interested in participating may choose to deliver a shorter pitch (15 minutes) or a longer paper (30 minutes). Pitches are typically meant to test ideas that you plan to flesh out in your research. Presentations can be based on a preliminary draft of your article or chapter, and may focus on material assembled for its purpose.
In this meeting we do not focus on a specific CIAW theme. We invite everyone whose research topic relates to the development of cultural identities, to political, economic and religious networks, to community formation, to colonization, migration, to narratives of identity, and to all other aspects of cultural interaction. We take the Ancient World spatially and temporally in its widest sense, including the Ancient Near East, the African South and the European North, from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages.
The purpose of this meeting is to exchange ideas and suggestions on research that is on its way. You may benefit from expertise of fellow-students, colleagues, and specialists in dropping your theoretical anchors, in expanding or restricting your database, or in enriching your bibliography. The setting of the meeting is informal and intended to help one another in furthering and sharpening thoughts, ideas, and methods.
If you are interested in participating in this research-in-progress meeting, you can let us know by Friday 31st March the latest by writing to Christina Williamson (c.g.williamson rug.nl). Please describe briefly which topic you want to deal with (title and max. 150 words), and indicate whether you want to give a pitch (15 minutes) or a presentation (30 minutes). By all means contact us if you want to discuss your topic in advance. We are more than happy to help out! Based on your reactions we will circulate a programme in the course of April. We prefer meeting in a live session but of course cater for those who wish to participate online. Drinks will be served afterwards.
