CDH Guest Lecture with Anton Cruysheer: The Roman Coin Hoard of Bunnik & The PAN Project
In the autumn of 2023, two metal detectorists discovered hundreds of ancient gold and silver coins in a meadow in the municipality of Bunnik, the Netherlands. A total of 404 coins dating from the second and first centuries BCE and the early decades of the Common Era were recovered. While most of the pieces are Roman, remarkably several dozen coins are British Celtic: such a Roman-British mixed hoard has never before been found on the European mainland.
This lecture discusses the initial discovery of the hoard as well as its eventual acquisition, presentation, and unveiling at the National Museum of Antiquities of the Netherlands. Furthermore, Anton Cruysheer will talk about his role as national program leader for Portable Antiquities of the Netherlands (PAN)—the national reporting center for archaeological finds: he will explain how finds are reported, recorded and published on the website (https://portable-antiquities.nl/pan/#/public) and how the cooperation with metal detectorists works.
