Digital Humanities Day 2026

When:We 28-01-2026 13:00 - 17:00Where:Marie Loke Room & Weber Foyer

How can the humanities help shape our understanding of technology’s role in society? During this DH Day, we invite you into the world of data in society with a mesmerizing 36m² floor mat visualizing AI research as well as student-led explorations of data justice, ethics, and agency.

13:00 - 13:45 Grounding AI (Opening keynote)

We may overlook the fact that AI is deeply embedded in many aspects of our daily lives, and involves a much broader range of technologies than well-known tools like ChatGPT. AI and machine learning algorithms are already woven into the fabric of science and society. Some of these applications spark controversy while others barely enter the public debate. Should they?

Mathilde Ficozzi and Dario Rodighiero introduce us to the Grounding AI Map, a 36m² walkable visualization of over two million scientific papers that talk about AI. Come explore the map of AI in scientific literature and join the discussion.

14:00 - 16:30 DH Activities

Take part in critical digital inquiry with the Digital Humanities Master’s students as they present a variety of activities and games covering today’s most pressing questions around data culture. From data (in)justice, surveillance capitalism and data agency, the students invite us to question and rethink data in society.

16:30 - 17:00 Closing note

To close the day, staff members of the Digital Humanities programme at the RUG will reflect on the day and say a few things about the possibilities and values of DH as a field. They’ll also give a sneak peek at upcoming DH conferences in Groningen, because the conversation is just getting started!

Organized by the staff and students of the RUG Digital Humanities MA Programme
