The autoimmune attack of β-cells is a hallmark of type 1 diabetes (T1D), but the events culminating in the specific loss of the insulin-secreting cells remain poorly understood. In collaboration with the group of Romano Regazzi (University of Lausanne, Switzerland), we provide evidence for the involvement of an exosome-mediated transfer of miRNAs from T lymphocytes to β-cells in the initial phases of T1D development.
