Introduction

Recovery from mental disorders is a personal process, yet knowledge about this process often remains inaccessible to those who could benefit most from it. The book De Kunst van Herstellen was made by Desiree Uuldriks, Michelle Servaas and Harriette Riese to bridge this gap. Building on a scientific study examining the use of personalized digital diaries during psychological treatment for depression, it combines scientific graphs, personal experiences, artwork, and reflections with insights during the recovery process of one person.

Choosing to publish the book as an open-access publication via the University of Groningen Press (UGP) was a deliberate decision. The authors wanted the book to be freely online available to ensure unrestricted access for all readers. Beyond researchers the aimed audience includes patients, persons with lived experience, family members, students, healthcare professionals, and anyone interested in recovery. We demonstrate that publishing openly can increase the visibility and accessibility of knowledge, particularly when research is communicated in a format that is understandable and appealing to a wide audience. With their diverse backgrounds, the authors will also use the book in their presentations in academic, educational, and lived- experience settings.

Motivation

De Kunst van Herstellen shows how Open Research can increase the accessibility of academic work. For us Open Research is about making knowledge accessible and valuable for society. For topics such as mental health and recovery, accessibility is particularly important because the intended audience extends beyond the academic community.

The interest in De Kunst van Herstellen illustrates its potential. The crowdfunding to print the book was supported by almost 200 donations, while the open-access PDF of the book has already been downloaded 321 times (d.d. 28-08-2026) from the UGP-website. Moreover, the book presentation and opening of the exhibition of the work in June 2026 in the University of Groningen Library (UB) attracted 50 participants. The book also received media attention through an interview with Desiree Uuldriks in the “Mijn boek en ik” section of the “Dagblad van het Noorden” in August. The original artworks in the book are exhibited until august in the UB and will be exhibited at the faculty of Clinical Psychology in Leiden (supported by a second book presentation) from September. We will also participate in the Eureka! Science festival 2026 at Forum Groningen.

The rapid uptake following publication suggests that there is a clear demand for openly available knowledge on this topic. The project therefore contributes not only to open dissemination of research but also to strengthening the connection between academic knowledge and society. Our motivation in three key points:

  1. To make knowledge on recovery of mental disorders freely available to everyone through open-access publishing.
  2. To connect academic knowledge, professional expertise, art and lived experience in a format that is accessible to a broad audience.
  3. To increase the societal impact of research by removing barriers to access and encouraging knowledge sharing beyond academia.
