YARN Decolonial Lunch Series - GLOBAL SOUTH ARCHIVES: Learning by Doing in the Experimental Media Archeology Studio Archive at the University of Johannesburg

When:Tu 17-03-2026 12:00 - 13:00Where: Collaboratory A (Harmonie)

In 2022, Landi Raubenheimer and Bongani J. Khoza, founded the Experimental Media Archaeology Studio (EMA Studio), a media archive in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. More than a collection of analogue media objects, this working archive is a maker space and teaching resource for Experimental Media Archaeology, centred on photography and other lens-based media of the pre-digital era.

In this talk, Dr. Raubenheimer and Dr Khoza outline how they conceptualised and developed the EMA Studio and reflect on how they have used it in collaborative, cross-disciplinary teaching across media theory and photography. They consider the potential that such collections and spaces harbour for learning by doing, redressing skewed media histories, and constructing alternative narratives and understandings of South African and Global South media history.
