ESRIG Researchers Participate in European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2026
Researchers from the Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen participated in the EGU General Assembly 2026, presenting new research across climate science, geoenergy, sustainability, biodiversity, and resource management.
Climate and Atmospheric Research
Ulrike Dusek presented a talk on aerosol-cloud interactions under high-reactive-nitrogen conditions, drawing on recent highlights from the CAINA project

Jinglan Fu presented research on the secondary formation of organic aerosols, concluding that the process is strongly enhanced in the presence of liquid water droplets.

Marije van der Born presented a poster on new particle formation and its effects on cloud condensation nuclei, based on measurements from the ESRIG research station in Lutjewad.

Iris Westra presented a poster on the first year of atmospheric hydrogen measurements and source fingerprinting at the CIO-RUG measurement station in Lutjewad.
Bert Scheeren presented a poster on the performance of a new mass spectrometer recently acquired by the CIO, specifically designed for continuous online detection of low-level atmospheric hydrogen.
Noni van Ettinger gave an oral presentation assessing the co-emission of methane and hydrogen from dairy farms in the Netherlands, based on field observations conducted in Groningen.
Mengrong Lu presented research on high-resolution methane inversion using the CTDAS-WRF framework. The poster highlighted recent progress in constraining methane emissions over East Asia, with a particular focus on regional emission patterns.

GeoEnergy Group Contributions
Researchers from the GeoEnergy group contributed to several sessions and presentations during the conference.
Johannes Miocic convened a session on secure subsurface storage in future energy systems and presented research on the impact of heterogeneity on the compaction of the Groningen gas field. During the assembly, he was also elected Deputy President of the Energy, Resources, and Environment Division of EGU.
Jinhang Zheng gave an oral presentation exploring how fault systems in rift basins form and evolve over geological timescales.
Merve Aydin presented a poster on leakage pathways and engaged with scientific experts in preparation for upcoming interviews related to her research.
Sustainability and Resource Governance
Xin Sun delivered an oral presentation on assessing and optimizing site-level environmental impacts of lithium production, contributing to ongoing discussions around sustainable critical mineral supply chains.

Anne Warchold shared updates on BeyondSDG, an ERC-funded project focused on sustainability governance and transformative pathways beyond the Sustainable Development Goals.
Nan Wu presented in the PICO format on “Assessing the real impact of inter-provincial grain trade on water and land resources within China" via a modified framework, examining the environmental implications of regional trade systems.

Hui Tang presented a poster titled “Inequality reduction of conservation responsibility: An unexpected outcome of achieving the 30×30 biodiversity target in China”, contributing to discussions on biodiversity governance and environmental equity.
