Title: Assessment of the biomass cost-supply potential in Colombia.

By: Yeanitza Trujillo, MSc EES student.

Summary:
The global interest for biomass has been increasing considerably due to its potential to mitigate climate change by providing a renewable energy resource that can be used in diverse applications such as heat and electricity generation, biofuels production or in other more sophisticated technologies. Colombia’s climatic and geographical conditions promote a fast vegetation regeneration, making it a country with high biomass availability. In fact, the FAO estimated that Colombia is one of the countries with the highest crop production expansion worldwide. Yet, its biomass potential has not been widely explored and investigated in detail, especially with respect to its dependency on land use management and agricultural efficiencies. The future development of these aspects is uncertain, thus a scenario analysis is crucial for assessing Colombia’s biomass supply. The objective of this work is to assess the cost-supply potential of biomass resources in Colombia, taking into account the regional differentiation of land use dynamics and the potential for efficiency improvements in the agricultural and livestock sector.

Title: Exploring the Environmental and Financial impact of a Product-service system business model in the home decoration sector.

By: Micha Klaarenbeek, MSc EES student.

Summary:
The linear ‘take, make, dispose’ economic model has been at the heart of industrial development for the last few decades. Although this model has generated immense economic growth, this approach has caused enormous environmental degradation as it heavily relies on large amounts of cheap, easily accessible materials and energy. The circular economy framework aims to decouple economic growth from environmental degradation. One of the solutions, proposed by the circular economy framework is the Product-as-a-Service or also referred to as Product-service system (PSS). In this business model, the ownership of materials/product remains with the supplier and the focus lies on the function that the product delivers. In this research project, the environmental impact of the ‘’Business As Usual’’ scenario is compared with a proposed PSS model with the help of a Life Cycle Assessment. In addition, the financial impact of a PSS model is demonstrated with different cost ownership scenario’s.
