Nigus Asefa

Nigus G. Asefa, originally from Ethiopia, has obtained his B. Pharm (BSc.) from Addis Ababa University in 2007. Immediately after graduation, he started working in a hospital as pharmacy head and then (in 2009), moved to a health science college, where he worked for most of his time as a tutor. In 2014, he obtained his Master of Public Health at Mekelle University (Ethiopia). He has investigated pharmaceutical formulations, road traffic crashes and worked in a reproductive health project in collaboration with Lund University (Sweden).

Currently, he is a PhD student under the EGRET ( European Glaucoma Research Training) program , at the University of Groningen, UMCG. The aim of his project is to determine the heritability of eye diseases and the potential factors (genetic, biomedical, socio-demographic, behavioral, physical, and psychological factors) that contribute to individual differences in glaucoma and other eye disease, in the Lifelines cohort study. In a number of sub-studies, he will investigate the controversial relationship of low blood pressure and heart rate variability as a risk factor for glaucoma.
