NWO-M Grant Awarded to Vassilis Kyriakou for Sustainable Ammonia Production Project

We are pleased to announce that Vassilis Kyriakou has received a grant of 400,000 euros from the NWO Domain Science-M programme. This funding will be used to appoint a PhD candidate and to purchase research materials.
The project, named "OASYS," addresses an important question in sustainable chemistry: "Can we produce fossil fuel-free ammonia in just one step?" Ammonia is essential for supporting the global population and is also a promising carbon-free energy carrier. However, it is currently one of the most energy-intensive chemicals, responsible for 1-2% of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions.
The OASYS project aims to develop an innovative electrochemical reactor that combines all steps of hydrogen generation and purification from water electrolysis, and ammonia synthesis into a single device. This highly efficient and dynamic approach can assist to the decentralisation of ammonia production by coping with intermittent renewable power supply, and thus, enabling its use as an alternative and sustainable energy vector.
This grant is part of the NWO's Open Competition Domain Science-M programme, which funds innovative research projects. We are proud of our colleague's accomplishment and look forward to the potential impacts of this research on sustainable energy solutions.
