Abstract

Eminent and controversial ancient historian Peter Wiseman in the last decade has been developing a striking revision of the role of Augustus as a politician, which causes increasing controversy since his inclusion of the archaeological interpretation of the Palatine Hill within this discourse. The lecture reviews the positions and repercussions of this discussion.

About the speaker

David Rijser teaches Latin and cultural history at the University of Amsterdam, and is professor by special appointment at the Rug on a chair of Classical Receptions. His Antiquity Renewed. How Tiberius landed in New Jersey will be published by Cambridge University Press in 2021.
