Meaning in the Making: Care in Higher Education
An Interdisciplinary Perspective to Care in Academia
Presented by Dr. Marta Silvera-Roig, Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria
This webinar draws on a series of teaching innovation projects developed over several years in university classrooms, exploring care as a central condition for learning. Informed by findings from affective neuroscience, it examines how students’ engagement, attention, and interpretation are shaped by their emotional experience. Rather than treating care as an additional or supportive element, the session approaches it as a way of structuring learning environments in which knowledge is constructed through meaningful activity. Particular attention is given to practices that connect academic work with real contexts and communities, allowing students to engage with learning as something that matters. The webinar argues for a model of higher education in which care is embedded in the very processes through which understanding is developed.
