Title: Can You Draw a Movie? A First Look at Data Visualization

Abstract:

How can we represent an entire movie in a single picture?

In this lecture, we will explore the basics of data visualization using storyline drawings, where characters are represented by lines that come together when they interact. We will discuss what makes a visualization easy to understand, how different design choices affect readability, and how simple algorithms can help us create better drawings.

The lecture introduces fundamental ideas from data visualization, human-computer interaction, and graph drawing. No prior knowledge of these topics is required.
