Title: Product line engineering for software-intensive systems.
Abstract:
Software reuse has been an important goal for many companies that develop products sharing a common, managed set of features that specify the specific needs of a market segment. Unfortunately, companies that have followed an opportunistic and unplanned software reuse approach were less successful to exploit the reuse potential and the commonality of the products.
Systematic software reuse has proven to be an effective approach to reduce cost and development cycle time, improve software quality and productivity. In this context, the notion of software product line has gained importance for realizing large scale systematic software reuse. For more than a decade now, many different companies have already taken benefit from adopting software product line engineering (SPLE) to achieve substantial business advantages.
In this talk I will present the key concepts for SPLE, provide the lessons learned from various SPLE projects, discuss the key challenges and benefits, and present the current developments in product line engineering for software intensive systems, and shortly discuss the product line engineering within the context of system-of-systems.
