Title: “The Golden Age of Software Architecture” better named “The Middle Age of
Software Architecture” – some provocative thoughts

Abstract:

A prominent research paper by Mary Shaw and Paul Clements named “The Golden Age of Software Architecture” published in 2006 and a follow-up in 2009 named “The Golden Age of Software Architecture Revisited” “was about the maturation of a field of research and practice that has spanned over a quarter century ...”. As one important indicator for technology maturation concise “concept formulation” is highlighted. Both authors are convinced “that we’re in transition from the exploration of concepts to routine application of those concepts“.

Several years later I will critically ask and discuss “Do we really have a common understanding of the basic software architectural terms?” In discussing important terms of Software Architecture such as Architecture, Layers Pattern, MVC I argue that we are far from the “Golden Age” but stuck in the “Middle Age” of software architecture lacking common agreed and concise “concept formulations”. But I will also give some hints how to solve the discovered problems to prepare a more founded basis for software architecture.
