Credits & Grading system

European Credit Transfer System (ECTS)

ECTS helps universities recognise courses completed abroad.

Key numbers

  • 1 year full-time study = 60 ECTS
  • 1 semester full-time study = 30 ECTS
  • 1 ECTS ≈ 28 hours of work (classes + reading + assignments + exam preparation)

Credits are only awarded if you pass the assessment for the course.

Dutch grading system

Grades are given on a 1-10 scale
The passing grades are 6-10:
10 = outstanding
9 = excellent
8 = very good
7 = good / satisfactory
6 = pass / sufficient
1 - 5 = fail

Please note

  • The mark 10 is hardly ever given in Groningen.
  • In general, the Groningen Law Faculty does not award high grades very easily.
  • Grades are awarded on an absolute scale (no curve).
  • The Faculty does not use “pass by compensation” (a high grade in one course cannot compensate for a fail in another)
