9th Avril McDonald International Humanitarian Law Public Lecture

The 9th Avril McDonald International Humanitarian Law Public Lecture is scheduled for Thursday 16 April 2026.  Given all that is going on in the world, this year’s lecture, delivered by none other than Judge Kimberly Prost of the International Criminal Court, is more relevant than ever ─ ‘Enforcing International Humanitarian Law: The Use of Sanctions and the Criminal Law.’ 

Judge Prost, formerly the first Ombudsperson for the UN Security Council Al Qaida Sanctions Committee, and a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, is herself currently under sanction from the US.

The bi-annual Avril McDonald lecture is organized by the Department Transboundary Legal Studies of the Faculty of Law. This lecture is dedicated to Avril McDonald, a scholar in the fields of international humanitarian law and international criminal law, who unexpectedly passed away in 2010 at the age of 44.

Some remembrance remarks will be made by Professor Marcel Brus, Chair International Law and after the lecture, Dr Audrey Fino, Assistant Professor International Humanitarian Law, will lead an interactive discussion.
