Research for action

Part of the mission of PRC Groningen is to focus on how research can be translated in either policy making or interventions. The following projects are examples of Research for Action

  • The Reproductive health and child spacing in rural South India research project is followed by a health educational campaign, Spandana, in cooperation with the Family Planning Association of India (FPAI), Mumbai. This is funded by IDPAD and the Bernard van Leer Foundation in The Hague. See the book publication.
  • Nutrition of pregnant women and well-being of their children. Researcher - Inge Hutter. Based on Inge Hutter's dissertation, results were translated into a popular English version and into Kannada, the local language of the state of Karnataka, India. This was published by the Manohara Grantha Mala Publishing Company in Dharwad, India. In addition, results were used by the local NGO and the India Development Service (IDS) in developing health educational material. This material is now being used by local health workers in the villages.
  • The development of the Diploma Course in Reproductive Health Management. In February 2001 the diploma course in Reproductive Health Management started at Karnatak University in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. The diploma course is a cooperative venture between Karnatak University, the J.S.S. Institute of Economic Research in Dharwad, Karnataka and the Population Research Centre, University of Groningen. In addition to students pursuing a degree programme, this course is also aimed at professionals working in the area of reproductive health.
