Launching 'UnExpected Values' at the UG Education Festival 2025
I was thrilled to present UnExpected Values for the first time at the University of Groningen's Education Festival on March 25th 2025. The session, titled “Exploring AI Ethics through a Board Game,” offered eight educators an exclusive first look at the game’s mechanics and its potential to make complex digital dilemmas tangible.
During the interactive workshop, participants stepped into the roles of entrepreneurs launching companies in sectors like social media, AI, and edtech. They grappled with the game's dilemmas, facing the classic trade-off: prioritize profit or uphold ethical principles on issues like data privacy and algorithmic bias?
The most rewarding part was the concluding discussion. The feedback was immensely positive, and the conversation moved quickly from how the game works to how it can be used. Educators actively explored practical ways to integrate the game into their own courses to foster critical thinking and debate among students.
This first outing confirmed the game's power as a catalyst for discussion. Seeing educators immediately recognize its value as a teaching tool was the best outcome we could have hoped for.
