A sea of values
Oceans and coastal areas are essential for nature, climate regulation, human wellbeing, and economic prosperity. Yet they are increasingly threatened by pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss. Addressing these challenges requires not only technological solutions, but also people who feel connected to the marine environment and motivated to protect it.This PhD research examined the psychological factors that encourage environmentally friendly behaviour in coastal and marine settings. The studies were conducted along the Belgian coast and on the island of Mallorca and involved both coastal residents and tourists.
The findings show that people feel a stronger sense of responsibility for protecting the marine environment when they value nature and feel connected to it. The social environment also matters. Individuals are more likely to act in environmentally friendly ways when they believe that others care about nature and feel responsible for environmental protection.
The research further demonstrates that collective initiatives, such as beach clean-up events, can have benefits beyond removing litter. These activities can inspire people to engage in broader environmental actions in the future, particularly when they experience that their contribution is meaningful and that they can make a difference together with others. These insights can support environmental communication, policy making, and community initiatives aimed at strengthening the relationship between people and the ocean and encouraging long-term pro-environmental engagement.
