Education PhD programmes Prospective PhD Candidates How to obtain a PhD position

Applying with your own funding

If you have already secured funding for a PhD project and would like to do this at the University of Groningen, you can contact the coordinator of the Graduate School of your interest.

Check the PhD research programmes to find information about the specific research subjects of each Graduate School and the names of the coordinators.

The University of Groningen welcomes international PhD students with a competitive scholarship from their home country and wants to create the best possible conditions for them to perform well during their PhD research. To this end, the university will invite PhD students with their own funding to enroll in the PhD Scholarship Programme, which started 1 September 2016, and it will top up their scholarships to the same amount as that of regular PhD scholarship students in this programme.

Please note: this arrangement for PhD scholarship students replaces the contribution to accommodation costs of €400 per month for PhD students with their own funding who have started before 1 September 2016. If you have started your PhD project before that date, and have been eligible for the housing contribution, you will keep this contribution for the duration of your scholarship (with a maximum of four years).
