Pre-master programmes

HBO transfer programmes

A pre-Master’s programme is a preparation track that enables you to qualify for admission to a Master’s degree at the University of Groningen. These programmes are designed for students who are not directly admissible, for example because their previous education does not fully match the entry requirements.

Every year, hundreds of students successfully complete a pre-Master’s and continue into their chosen Master’s programme at the University of Groningen. Most pre-Master’s programmes start on 1 September, some exceptions apply.

Pre-Master’s programmes are open to:

  • graduates of Dutch universities of applied sciences (HBO)

  • international students with a non-Dutch Bachelor’s degree

  • Dutch students with a university Bachelor’s degree that does not directly qualify for admission to their chosen Master’s

The content and length of a pre-Master’s programme depend on your background and the Master’s degree you want to pursue. Some programmes are as compact as 30 ECTS, others are larger. You will usually need a related educational background, but at some faculties it is also possible to enrol with a different background. In that case, your programme is likely to be more extensive.

Tuition fees

For a pre-Master’s programme, you pay a fee per ECTS credit. More information can be found on the page about pre-Master’s tuition fees.
