A few months ago, Khushboo from Delhi, India, completed her Master’s in Media Studies, specialising in Media Creation and Innovation, at the University of Groningen (UG). At 27, she looks back on her student experience with great fondness and plenty of advice for those considering following in her footsteps.

Khushboo’s academic path was anything but straightforward

After studying Journalism in India and gaining work experience at several marketing agencies, her interests began to shift. “I realised that I enjoyed creative problem-solving and research,” she explains. However, switching to an entirely new academic field wasn’t easy. “In many places, I would have needed to redo my Bachelor’s first. At the UG, I could access the Master’s through a pre-master’s programme, which made all the difference. I instinctively knew this was the right choice.”

Before arriving in the Netherlands, Khushboo did her research carefully. She explored online forums, read about the city, and spoke with people who had already studied there. “Everyone I talked to described Groningen as vibrant, international, and welcoming. The fact that it’s a true student city really appealed to me.”

When she first arrived, she joined the UG’s welcoming ceremony. “It was charming. There was even an information fair about living and working in Groningen. It made me feel at ease right away.”

Her time as a student was rich and varied. Engaging classes, approachable professors, a lively social life, and a part-time job all combined to make her experience rewarding. “I really enjoyed the balance. The city feels safe, student-friendly, and very inclusive. You quickly feel at home.”

Looking ahead...

Khushboo envisions a versatile career in the creative industries. She wants to draw on both her professional experiences in marketing and the academic knowledge she gained at UG. “I’d love to work as a creative professional, but I also want to keep research opportunities open. That’s something I discovered I really enjoy during my Master’s.”

Her advice to prospective students from India who are still uncertain about studying at Groningen is straightforward: “Don’t hesitate! I had doubts too about moving abroad and choosing the right programme, but my experience at Groningen has been nothing short of rewarding. The University of Groningen is not only academically strong, with engaging courses and approachable professors, but it also offers a supportive international environment that makes the transition much smoother. It’s safe, fun, and the city feels like home in no time! Coming from India, I also appreciate how inclusive and welcoming the student community is. If you want to challenge yourself, grow personally and professionally, and make a lifetime of cherished memories, Groningen is the place to be.”
