Implementing publications in Nestor and e-readers

Journal articles or e-books

Policy UMCG / Faculty of Medical Sciences

The UMCG does not allow the use of full text publications in Nestor. A good alternative is to use a link to articles in e-journals or (parts of) e-books under licence of the university, or published in open access. This way, no payments have to be made for copyrights, and notifying Stichting (Foundation) PRO is not necessary.

To determine whether a certain text is available online, or part of a university licence, you search for the article or e-book in SmartCat. Make sure you submit a persistent link to Nestor. Below you'll find more information.

Check for electronic availability

You can check electronic availability of a publication in SmartCat. Please check if a publication is actually available by clicking until you see the full text of the publication on your screen. Of course, you can also link directly to an article or e-book ; see the information on 'How to create a reliable link’. Please report any problems via cmb@rug.nl .

An article

  • Search for the article, e.g. in PubMed or in one of the other databases.
  • Click the Get-it button
  • and click the button ‘View Full Text’ (if available).
  • Check if you have access to the full-text by actually viewing the article.
  • Now look on the webpage or the opened PDF for a permanent link. See: ´How to create a reliable link´.

A chapter/part of a book

  • Search SmartCat for the book.
  • Sometimes a title appears more than once; choose the copy which states: ‘Held by: University of Groningen Library’ and click the button ‘view online’ (if available). This button is not present when the article is not online available.
  • You will now go tot he platform offering the book. The outlook varies per platform, as well as how to get to the chapter/part concerned. Search until you have the chapter/part actually shows on your screen.
  • Now look on the webpage or the opened PDF for a permanent link. See: ´How to create a reliable link´.
