New Business Model Conferences (NBM)

Dr. Niels Faber, staff member of Campus Fryslân, is member of the permanent board of the annual New Business Models Conference (NBM Conference). This series of conferences provides a platform for scholars and practitioners to discuss and share insights on business models that aim to shape a sustainable society. Over the years, the conference has attracted participants from all over the world, building a strong community more than 700 people.

In the past five years, the conference has visited various parts of Europe. In 2016, the Toulouse Business School hosted the very first conference in the series (NBM@Toulouse 2016). The year thereafter, hospitality was found at the University of Graz (NBM@Graz 2017), where the focus was on the role of business models in multiple value creation. In Sofia, the University of National and World Economy set the stage to discuss ways in which new business models realize impacts at local, regional, and international levels (NBM@Sofia, 2018). Berlin’s ESCP Europe campus hosted NBM@Berlin 2019. There, the focus shifted towards the contribution of new business models to reaching the Sustainable Development Goals building on sustainable entrepreneurship, innovation, and transitions to future-fit societies. In 2020 year, the conference has visited Radboud University Nijmegen (NBM@Nijmegen 2020). The focus was ‘driving sustainable transition: people, business, society’. Due to the extraordinary circumstances around the COVID-19 pandemic, NBM@Nijmegen 2020 was the first full online NBM conference.

2021 Conference

The 2021 edition of NBM is hosted by the University of Halmstad, entitle 'New Business Models in a decade of action: sustainable, evidence-based, impactful'. More information about the program is available here. An impression of the experience is provided by Eric Fath Kolmes, PhD candidate from the Centre of Sustainable Entrepreneurship. NBM@Halmstad 2021 again will be an online event.

Campus Fryslân involvement

Campus Fryslân staff will also be present at the conference. Gjalt de Jong and his research team host two workshops, the first on ‘the future of sustainable entrepreneurship research’, the second on 'the future of sustainable entrepreneurship teaching and consultancy'. Also, Niels Faber will chair track 1.4 on ‘Business Models for a Circular Economy’ together with Abishek Agarwal of the Aberdeen Business School, and Jan Jonker of Radboud University, The Netherlands. The track on Business Models for the Circular Economy has been part of the conference since the very beginning.
