Hello! My name is Maria Magas, and I work at Campus Fryslân within the Admissions Office, bachelor programmes. I joined the UG in October 2022, just as the application cycle began - a challenging start to say the least!

What I enjoy most about working at UG is the time flexibility within my position. As a small team, we each have designated roles, allowing for clear focus and the feeling of responsibility for your tasks. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve not only grown professionally but also had the opportunity to engage with a variety of inspiring activities and projects.

As an art and design lover, one of the biggest joys of my job is working in de Beurs in Leeuwarden. This beautiful building is not only an inspiring environment but also a reflection of the creativity and vibrancy of Campus Fryslân. Every day, the atmosphere of this space motivates me to think creatively and tackle challenges with enthusiasm.

Embracing Growth and Opportunities

Reflecting on my journey at UG, I’m proud of the personal and professional development opportunities I’ve embraced. From workshops to team activities, UG offers an incredible array of resources for young professionals looking to refine their skills and expand their horizons.

For instance, I’ve participated in a presenting course that boosted my confidence and polished my public speaking abilities. I also took a Dutch language course to better integrate into the local culture. Also workshops like Active Bystander and Training in Giving and Receiving Feedback have equipped me with tools to navigate complex workplace dynamics. Not to forget the Time Management Course, which has been invaluable for balancing multiple responsibilities.

Beyond training, I’ve engaged in fun and enriching activities such as mud walking, the Language Buddy programme, and a vegan cooking class. These experiences not only foster creativity and teamwork but also strengthen the sense of community at UG.

My advice to fellow young professionals? Always stay curious about the opportunities around you. Explore the courses and programmes available, and don’t hesitate to discuss your goals with your manager—they are often more supportive than you might think! If your work is seasonal, like mine, try choosing the courses that take place not in the busy time. You will thank yourself later for that.

In addition to my Admissions position, I’m the treasurer of the Campus Fryslân Social Club. In this role, I organize monthly activities for staff, from casual gatherings to creative events. This has been a fantastic outlet for practicing creativity, learning event organization, and connecting with colleagues outside of work. It’s deeply fulfilling to contribute to our faculty’s vibrant and inclusive community.

A Day in the Life: Supporting Applicants

In my daily work, I’m the go-to person for applicants navigating their application journey. From guiding them on which documents to upload, helping craft compelling CVs, and advising on motivational videos, to hosting webinars and online events, I’m there every step of the way.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is seeing the applicants I’ve supported arrive in Leeuwarden during Introduction Week. Meeting them in person after months of virtual interactions is incredibly special. It’s also great to sometimes engage with their parents, helping them understand and feel confident about their children’s academic choices.

Looking Ahead

As I look to the future, I’m excited about continuing my growth within UG. In January, I’ll be joining the Career Orientation for Support Staff course. I’m eager to explore potential career paths and uncover new talents that I can apply in my work and beyond. Hope to see you there!

For those just starting at UG or considering applying, I encourage you to take full advantage of the resources available. Whether it’s a workshop to develop leadership skills or a casual social activity, every opportunity is a chance to grow, connect, and contribute.

Passing the Baton

Finally, I’d like to pass this blog on to Samantha Janssen. Samantha is an incredibly enthusiastic person who can share a bit on how to combine your passions with your work!

Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you around Campus Fryslân in de Beurs, soaking in its beauty soon!
