Together, we can achieve more!
How does the University of Groningen (UG) ensure that its education is and remains future-proof? One of the answers lies in collaboration with other institutions. We do this through Npuls. Npuls is a national programme comprising of 102 vocational schools (MBO), universities of applied sciences (HBO) and universities (WO). Npuls runs through 2031 and is funded by the National Growth Fund. Over the coming years, all participants will work with Npuls to build a future-proof and innovative education sector.
At the University of Groningen, the Centre for Teaching and Learning is the department responsible for shaping the collaboration within Npuls and helping to align it with the UG’s priorities. Npuls has provided a startup grant to give the CTL at the UG a strong start.
UG Objectives
Npuls works on many different goals and topics, more than 25 in total. In the spring of 2026, the UG has made strategic choices for goals on which we intend to take a proactive approach:
-
Student digital literacy – We recognize the need to strengthen AI and data skills. Several faculties have expertise in this area. The CTL will actively address this on behalf of the University of Groningen.
-
Working with AI, data, and EdTech – The university is actively contributing to ensure that learners and instructors gain practical skills and digital tools to use AI and data safely and effectively. The CTL is also deeply involved in this area. For example, the EduGenAI platform is currently available as part of this initiative.
-
(Academic) Data – We are working to ensure secure and reliable access to academic data for students and faculty. This effort is linked to the ongoing Analytics for Learning and Teaching project.
-
Login, Enrollment, and Registration – A sector-wide computer system is being developed to replace Studielink and enable a standardized, integrated enrollment process for degree programs. The Student Information & Administration (SIA) department of University Services and the ICT for Education department of the CIT are actively involved in this initiative.
The University of Groningen is also participating in other themes, such as the “Identity” theme: the development of a national EduID infrastructure, so that all learners have a single digital identity for accessing educational applications and resources across the country. Or the “Educational Offer” theme. The goal of this is to present the educational offer in a uniform manner at the level of courses and course units. This is essential for attracting new learners (regular, LLO, and post-academic education).
